Widely known for their beauty and fragrance, most bear an abundance of large, showy flowers above pinnate leaves with serrated margins. Roses are perfect for adding beautiful flowers and a delicious scent to the garden. They make a wonderful gift for a special occasion, with the names of some varieties making them well-suited to particular occasions. Sharp thorns allowing them to hang onto vegetation and grow over it also makes them a useful choice for creating an impenetrable, intruder-proof barrier.
Climbing roses are well suited to growing up or over walls, trellises and arches and are easier to manage as they flower on old wood. English roses are repeat flowering shrub roses offering classic rose scents and voluminous flower formations. Floribunda is Latin for "many flowering", representing a group of roses that bear many flowers held in large clusters that bloom continuously from summer through to late autumn. Hybrid teas are large-flowered roses produced one per stem at the tips of straight, upright stems, making excellent cut flowers. Miniature roses grow to a height of 30-45cm (1-1.5 feet) with prettily-formed flowers, useful for smaller gardens, tubs and window boxes.
Patio roses are really just dwarf floribundas with the same style of flowers and foliage just in a smaller package, sometimes grafted onto a standard to add height to the patio display. Polyantha roses are compact, dwarf roses with densely packed bunches of double or semi-double flowers throughout the summer, growing to 60-90cm (2-3 feet) high. Rambling roses tend to be larger climbing roses with more pliable stems that can be used to run along the soil to use as ground cover - they are free-flowering, produce beautiful hips in the autumn and can be used as support for other climbers. Standard roses have a single tall stem, topped with foliage and flowers, like a small tree.
