Tall growing Japanese maple trees

Japanese Maples are slow-growing, deciduous trees known for their graceful habit, autumn colour and beautiful, pointed leaf shapes. In this section, we've picked out the best large / tall-growing Japanese maples, all growing to 3 metres tall or more with some such as Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' and Acer palmatum 'Sango-Kaku' capable of towering up to around 6 metres tall under ideal growing conditions. These varieties are best-suited to larger gardens with ample space where you're looking for a show-stopping focal point and centre-piece or aiming to create a foil for flowering plants across a more extensive area of the garden.

These larger-growing Japanese maples tend to be 'palmatum' varieties with deeply-lobed leaves in the shape of a hand, often boasting stunning autumn foliage colours. The 'dissectum' / dissected Japanese maples tend to be smaller-growing Japanese maples growing to less than 3 metres tall. Red and purple-leaved varieties need some sun to fully bring out their beautiful deep hues, whilst variegated Japanese maples need partial shade to prevent their foliage being scorched by the afternoon sun. They're best grown where they will have plenty of space and not have to complete with other plants around them.
