Passion fruit plants

Passion flower is a delightful, exotic-looking evergreen climber for a sunny, sheltered spot. It produces deliciously fragrant white flowers, flushed with purple blue and pink shades, varying on individual leaflets around a central display of prominent purple tinged filaments. The flowers are followed by brightly coloured, orange-yellow egg shaped passion fruits. It grows surprisingly well in containers, flowering best when the roots are restricted. Plant up using a rich, loam-based compost such as John Innes No 3 or a high quality peak free compost and expect to need to water a bit more often than their counterparts in the border. In colder parts of the UK, passion flower may be grown under glass in a greenhouse or conservatory. Grow passion flower in a moderately fertile, moist yet well drained soil. It is unfussy about acidity but shelter from cold, drying winds is key. If growing in a south-facing conservatory or greenhouse, provide some shade from direct sunlight at the hottest times of the day in summer to prevent the leaves from scorching.
