Tall growing conifer plants

Tall growing conifers are most commonly grown in rows as hedging plants but can equally act as stately standalone specimens - monkey puzzle tree being perhaps the best example. There are also narrow, columnar varieties such as fastigate yews which are perfect for adding height, structure and formality to the garden. Conifers are a popular choice of tall-growing hedging plants for good reason. They form a dense, evergreen screen which provides privacy and protection from strong winds. They're also highly effective at reducing noise pollution, making them particularly useful for urban and suburban areas where traffic and air pollution tends to be higher, whilst offering a more natural aesthetic to walls or fences. Leylandii conifers tend to grow the quickest at 75-90cm (2.5-3 feet) per year but note that they will grow to 12 metres+ if left unchecked. There are around 600 varieties of conifer, including the popular Spruce, Pine, Fir, Yew, Cedar and Chamaecyparis - the best tall growers are shown below.
