Climbing plants for a west facing wall
West-facing walls receive sunlight throughout the day, making them (along with south facing walls) warmer and brighter than those that are north or east facing. They absorb the sun's heat throughout the day, emitting it through the night, making west-facing sites perfect for less hardy climbers and wall shrubs. Climbers that succeed on west facing walls include jasmine, honeysuckle plants, clematis, passion flower, vitis, wisteria and Actinidia Kolomikta. Clematis are well-known for producing masses of distinctive flowers available in a broad palette of colours and various types and sizes. Climbing jasmine produce stunning, sweetly-scented tubular flowers, typically from June to September except winter jasmine. Honeysuckle, also known as lonicera, is the classic twining climber of the cottage garden with highly ornamental, large cartwheel-shaped flower heads consisting of wonderful, tubular individual flowers each exuding a sweet fragrance. Fruit trees can also be trained as espaliers, cordons or fans against a west-facing wall to act as a fruiting climber.
