Saxifraga plants
Saxifraga is a mossy, mat-forming evergreen alpine perennial producing dainty pink, red or white star-shaped flowers in spring above an attractive rosette of spiky fresh green leaves. It has a compact growth habit, perfect for the front of the rock garden, flower beds or informal cottage garden plantings, with blooms contrasting beautifully with the foliage. Also suitable for alpine troughs, raised beds, pots and containers or in an alpine house. Saxifraga is a herbaceous perennial, meaning it dies back to below ground level each winter, before bursting back into life again in the spring. It prefers a spot in full sun but some light shade at the hottest time of the day, in a moist yet well drained soil. See our guide on how to grow herbaceous perennials for more ideas and tips.
