Lonicera hedging plants

Browse our range of the best lonicera hedging plants, perfect for a low, dense, small-leaved evergreen hedge with lush foliage colours. There are two main types of lonicera hedging – lonicera pileata, commonly known as privet honeysuckle, and lonicera Baggesen’s Gold, sometimes lovingly referred to as ‘poor mans box’. Privet honeysuckle is a dense, fast-growing bushy shrub with a spreading growth habit and angular branches adorned with tiny, fresh green oval leaves. It produces creamy-white flowers in late spring followed by translucent purple berries that are well-loved by birds in the autumn. Cost effective and commonly used as a landscaping plant, lonicera pileata retains its leaves through the winter in all but the harshest conditions and can also work well as a ground cover plant with suitable pruning. As the name suggests, Lonicera Baggesen’s Gold is a golden-yellow leaved variety with arching branches which can be tightly clipped to maintain a more formal appearance or allowed to grow naturally if you’re looking for a more informal style. The vibrancy of its foliage makes it useful for flower arrangements and it produces yellow-green flowers in spring, sometimes followed by small fruits.
