Deciduous hedging plants

Our selection of the best deciduous hedging plants for autumnal seasonal colour and interest. Deciduous plants make excellent hedges and many are British natives such as green or purple beech, which has a beautiful, rustic appearance as it holds onto its jaded leaves into the winter. Admittedly, you won’t get the same level of privacy with a deciduous hedge compared to their evergreen counterparts, especially from late autumn to early spring, so if year-round privacy is top priority, consider our range of evergreen hedging plants instead. That said, deciduous varieties filter strong winds more effectively, avoiding damaging wind corridors and turbulence that can sometimes be a problem with long rows or tall, dense evergreen hedges. Plus, the slightly more open nature of most deciduous hedging plants is perfect for providing a home and shelter for wildlife and nesting birds. Deciduous hedges also tend to be more forgiving of hard pruning – aim to give them a light trim once a year in late summer, although if you miss a year or two they’ll respond well to being pruned a bit more vigorously.
