Fragrant conifer plants

Conifers are best known for being conical, cone-bearing, evergreen foliage plants, well suited to adding shape, structure and texture to the border. But many conifers can also help bring a delightful coniferous fragrance into the garden, useful for borders and specifically designated sensory spaces. In December we talk about one of the benefits of traditional Norway Spruce Christmas trees being their delightful Christmassy scent – this and many other conifers can be used to introduce fragrance into the garden in the same way all year round. Thuja conifers are easy to grow and unfussy with a similar appearance to leylandii and foliage that gives off a wonderful, fruity aroma when crushed and after it has rained. The blue needles of Abies concolor (white fir) also have a pleasant tangerine and lemon scent whilst several juniper varieties have a rich scent of apples and lemons. For more information, take a look at our guide to conifers and how-to article on how to plant, grow and care for conifers.
