Perennial plants for full sun

Perennials are flowering plants with little or no woody growth which generally survive the frost and live in the ground for more than 2 years. Herbaceous perennials are those perennials which bloom over the spring and summer, die back in the autumn and winter then re-grow from their root-stock in the spring. There is no shortage of sun-loving perennials that enjoy the heat and glow from lots of direct sunlight throughout the day. Many are easy to grow, produce amazing blooms, bring a variety of colours, heights and textures to the garden and attract a raft of wildlife such as bees, butterflies, birds and beneficial insects. Keep in mind that perennials for full sun can have varying requirements for moisture, drainage and soil type. Whilst some such as bearded irises will cope with almost anything you throw at them, others need a moisture-retentive soil and more frequent watering to cope with the height of the summer heat. Silver and yellow is a classic colour combination for hot, dry borders – for example, silver-leaved perennials such as Artemisia can combine really well with the golden yellow flowers of Achillea. Sedum and Salvia plants are another popular combination for dry, sunny borders too. So, why not fill a sunny spot in your garden with some of these colourful beauties…
