Key Features

Spectacular Central Variegation

The 'Gold Flash' variety showcases a unique variegation pattern with brilliant golden-yellow centres surrounded by rich green margins, creating an eye-catching 'splash' effect that appears to glow from within each leaf.

Contemporary Garden Appeal

This modern variety offers a fresh, contemporary take on traditional holly, perfect for gardeners seeking something distinctive yet maintaining classical topiary elegance.

Intense Colour Contrast

The dramatic contrast between the bright golden centres and deep green leaf edges creates exceptional visual impact that stands out dramatically against traditional garden backdrops.

Expert Standard Training

Each tree has been carefully trained over several years to achieve perfect lollipop proportions, featuring a dense, precisely shaped spherical crown balanced on a clean, straight stem.

Enhanced Light Reflection

The golden leaf centres catch and reflect light beautifully, creating an almost illuminated effect that brightens shaded areas and adds warmth to winter gardens.

Stable Modern Breeding

Benefits from modern plant breeding techniques ensuring consistent variegation patterns and reliable garden performance.

Growing Conditions

Soil Requirements

  • Type: Well-draining, fertile soil preferred

  • pH: 6.0-7.5 (adaptable to slightly acidic through neutral conditions)

  • Drainage: Excellent drainage essential - sensitive to waterlogged conditions

  • Fertility: Benefits from rich, organic soil but adapts to average garden conditions

  • Mulching: Appreciates organic mulch to maintain consistent soil conditions

Light Requirements

  • Optimal: Bright, filtered light to partial sun for best golden colour development

  • Colour Enhancement: Most vibrant golden centres develop in good light with some protection from intense afternoon sun

  • Shade Performance: Reasonable tolerance of partial shade, though golden intensity may diminish

  • Light Quality: Benefits from morning sun and bright, indirect afternoon light

Climate Tolerance

  • Hardiness: Hardy to -20°C, suitable for most British locations

  • Wind Resistance: Good wind tolerance once established, though young plants benefit from shelter

  • Coastal Conditions: Reasonable tolerance of coastal exposure and salt spray

  • Urban Environment: Performs well in urban gardens with moderate pollution tolerance

  • Microclimate: Appreciates slightly sheltered positions for optimal foliage quality

Planting Guide

Best Planting Times

  • Optimal Season: Can be planted any time of the year, providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and its not excessively windy. Also work very well kept in the pot or put into a container on the patio or either side of a doorway, entrance or path.

Planting Instructions

  1. Select location with appropriate drainage and light for optimal golden colour development

  2. Dig planting hole 1.5 times wider than root ball but no deeper

  3. Ensure root ball surface sits level with surrounding soil

  4. Remove from container and gently loosen any circling roots

  5. Backfill with mixture of native soil and quality compost (3:1 ratio)

  6. Install support stake for first 12-18 months to secure standard form

  7. Water thoroughly and apply 8cm layer of organic mulch

  8. Keep mulch away from stem base to prevent collar problems

Establishment Support

Young standard trees require staking until root system develops adequate stability to support the crown independently.

Care and Maintenance

Watering Requirements

  • First Year: Regular, consistent watering essential for proper establishment

  • Mature Trees: Moderate water needs; reasonable drought tolerance when established

  • Container Plants: Regular monitoring crucial, especially during warm weather

  • Seasonal Care: Reduce watering frequency in autumn/winter but avoid complete drought

Feeding Programme

  • Annual Feed: Balanced, slow-release fertiliser applied in early spring

  • Container Specimens: Monthly liquid feeding during growing season (April-September)

  • Organic Enhancement: Annual mulch with well-composted organic matter

  • Variegation Support: Occasional balanced feed helps maintain strong colour contrast

Pruning and Shape Management

  • Timing: Mid to late summer (July-August) after flowering to preserve developing berries

  • Crown Shaping: Light, regular trimming to maintain perfect spherical form

  • Variegation Monitoring: Remove any plain green shoots to maintain golden flash pattern

  • Tool Requirements: Sharp, clean secateurs or topiary shears

  • Frequency: 1-2 times annually for optimal shape and colour maintenance

Variegation Care

Regular inspection for shoots lacking the golden centre pattern is important; remove immediately to maintain the characteristic 'Gold Flash' appearance.

Buying Topiary from Jacksons Nurseries

Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.

Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email sales@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

Please Note: Plants in 20 litre pots and above might require a pallet delivery starting at £79.99 per pallet. Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get between 5-10 trees or more than 100 of 2-litre plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.
