Discover the extraordinary power of Honeyberry 'Boreal Blizzard', the legendary University of Saskatchewan introduction that earned its name when researchers were literally stopped in their tracks by its spectacular berry size and outstanding flavour profile. This remarkable cultivar represents the pinnacle of honeyberry breeding, combining the largest berries of any honeyberry variety with exceptional sweet zingy flavour, vigorous upright growth, and outstanding disease resistance. Developed by leading Canadian researchers specifically for improved berry size, yield, and flavour, this honeyberry delivers maximum harvest potential with berries that weigh twice as much as standard varieties, offering the perfect balance of premium fruit quality, mechanical harvest suitability, and garden versatility that transforms any landscape into a highly productive and beautiful edible sanctuary.
Produces some of the largest honeyberries of any cultivar, with berries so impressive they stopped University of Saskatchewan researchers in their tracks. The berries weigh twice as much as standard varieties, making this the ultimate choice for gardeners seeking maximum fruit impact and faster picking operations. The fruit shape is broad, slightly tapered at the ends, and somewhat flat, earning it the nickname "surfboard" for its distinctive appearance.
Features excellent sweet zingy flavour that combines premium taste with reduced acidity. With half the acidity of other haskaps and one of the highest sugar levels, this variety delivers the perfect balance of sweetness and tang. The tangy-sweet tubular blue fruit features crimson flesh and is often compared to blueberries, but with quadruple the level of anthocyanin and triple the antioxidants.
The fruit is tender and juicy with a delicious flavour, whilst retaining flavour whether fresh, frozen, or dried. The large fruit makes for faster picking in commercial operations, though fruits should be harvested soon after ripening as they start to drop 3 weeks after reaching maturity.
Ripens in June, later than most varieties, providing valuable harvest extension when most other soft fruits have finished for the season. Ripens a week after Aurora or Tundra varieties, ensuring continuous fresh fruit availability throughout the summer months.
Features good resistance to powdery mildew, along with excellent mildew and sunscald resistance. This natural disease resistance makes it perfect for organic growing methods and low-maintenance fruit gardening, ensuring consistent berry production without frequent chemical treatments.
Features an upright, vigorous growth habit with strong branching structure that develops a dome-shaped crown. Described as a good vigorous upright growing bush, this excellent growth pattern requires minimal training whilst providing maximum ornamental and productive impact with strong structural integrity for heavy fruit loads.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with consistent moisture retention. These plants can thrive in partial shade and prefer rich soil. Benefits from regular watering during the growing season, particularly during fruit development, whilst tolerating various soil types including clay when properly amended with organic matter and mulch.
Perfect for cooler regions, this cold-hardy plant requires about 1,000-1,200 chill hours, making it exceptionally suitable for British growing conditions. The outstanding cold hardiness ensures reliable fruit production even in challenging northern climates.
Perfect for container cultivation on patios, terraces, or in small gardens where space is limited. The compact mature size and exceptional productivity make it ideal for pot growing, allowing precise soil control and easy maintenance access whilst providing substantial berry harvests from limited space.
Requires cross-pollination with Boreal Beast for optimal fruit production. Also cross-pollinates with Tundra and Indigo varieties, making it an essential component of productive honeyberry orchards and providing flexibility in companion planting choices.
Excellent for dedicated fruit gardens, kitchen gardens, and commercial orchards, but equally effective in mixed ornamental borders. Perfect for wildlife gardens providing late-season pollinator support, container displays for patio growing, and productive landscapes requiring maximum yield with minimal maintenance.
Delivers quadruple the level of anthocyanin and triple the antioxidants compared to blueberries, making it a true superfruit for health-conscious gardeners. This exceptional nutritional profile combined with outstanding flavour makes it perfect for fresh eating, smoothies, and gourmet culinary applications.
Success with 'Boreal Blizzard' centres on providing well-drained, moisture-retentive soil and ensuring cross-pollination with compatible varieties such as Boreal Beast. Choose a sunny to partially shaded position with good air circulation, mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and take advantage of its exceptional disease resistance and vigorous growth habit. Harvest promptly when ripe to prevent fruit drop, and your Honeyberry 'Boreal Blizzard' will prove that legendary berry size and exceptional flavour can be combined in one outstanding variety, delivering late-season harvest excellence and premium superfruit quality that transforms any garden into a highly productive and beautiful edible landscape sanctuary.
Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
