  • Flower Size: 2.75 inches wide
  • Flower Colour: Rich golden yellow
  • Hardiness: Hardy in the UK down to temperatures of -20 to -15 degrees Celcius (RHS hardiness rating H6)
  • Growth Habit: Compact clumping, arching foliage

Exceptional Bloom Performance

'Stella de Oro' produces masses of rich golden-yellow flowers with a delicate ruffled edge, creating a cheerful display that outshines most other perennials. The 2.75-inch wide blooms feature six recurved petals with prominent golden stamens, providing exceptional visual impact that illuminates darker garden corners and complements virtually any colour scheme.

Outstanding Reblooming Habit

This remarkable daylily begins flowering in late spring and continues producing fresh blooms continuously through to the first hard frost, making it one of the longest-blooming perennials available. Unlike many daylilies that have distinct flowering periods, 'Stella de Oro' maintains consistent bloom production throughout the growing season, ensuring your garden never lacks colour.

Compact Garden-Friendly Size

'Stella de Oro' reaches just 50cm in height with a neat spreading habit of 40-50cm, making it perfect for smaller gardens, front-of-border plantings, and container cultivation. This manageable size provides substantial visual impact without overwhelming neighbouring plants or requiring extensive space.

Attractive Architectural Foliage

The narrow, arching green leaves create an elegant fountain-like clump that remains attractive throughout the growing season. The sword-like foliage provides excellent textural contrast in mixed plantings and maintains its structure even when not in bloom, ensuring year-round garden interest.

Exceptional Wildlife Value

The nectar-rich blooms attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the extended flowering period. The continuous blooming habit makes 'Stella de Oro' particularly valuable for supporting wildlife populations during the crucial late-season period when many other flowers have finished.

Versatile Planting Applications

An ideal choice for front-of-border plantings, edging pathways, rock gardens, and container displays. This versatility makes it suitable for cottage gardens, contemporary designs, and everything in between. The compact size and reliable performance make it perfect for inexperienced gardeners seeking guaranteed results.

Mass Planting Excellence

Outstanding for mass plantings, ground cover, and creating drifts of colour in larger gardens. When grown in groups, individual plants should be spaced approximately 35-40cm apart to allow for mature spread whilst creating a cohesive display.

Container Growing Specialist

Perfectly suited to container cultivation, making it ideal for patios, balconies, courtyards, and areas where moveable colour is desired. The compact size and extended flowering period make it excellent for seasonal containers and permanent pot displays.

Soil and Position

Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. 'Stella de Oro' tolerates a wide range of soil conditions but performs best in fertile, well-drained loam. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root problems during winter months.

Light Requirements

Thrives in full sun positions receiving 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, though it tolerates partial shade better than many daylilies. Maximum flowering occurs in full sun positions, whilst shadier locations may reduce bloom quantity.

Soil Preferences

Adaptable to various soil types including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided drainage is adequate. Tolerates slightly alkaline to slightly acidic conditions, making it suitable for most British garden soils without amendment.

Daily Care

Deadhead spent flowers regularly to maintain appearance and encourage continuous blooming. Remove entire flower stems (scapes) once all buds have finished flowering to promote new growth and additional bloom cycles.

Division and Propagation

Divide clumps every 3-4 years in early spring (March-April) or late summer (August-September) to maintain vigour and create new plants. The fibrous root system divides easily, making propagation straightforward for gardeners of all experience levels.

Seasonal Maintenance

Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn or early spring. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support the extended blooming period throughout the growing season.

Border and Bed Planting

Excellent for front-of-border positions where its compact size and continuous blooming provide consistent colour. The golden flowers complement purple, blue, and white perennials beautifully, creating stunning seasonal combinations.

Pathway and Edging

Perfect for edging pathways, driveways, and garden beds where its neat habit and reliable performance provide structure and colour. The compact size ensures it won't encroach on walking areas whilst providing maximum visual impact.

Contemporary Garden Design

The clean lines and consistent performance make it ideal for contemporary garden designs where reliability and low maintenance are priorities. Works beautifully in geometric plantings and modern landscaping schemes.

Pet Safety

Daylilies are toxic to cats if ingested. Consider placement away from areas where cats frequent, or choose alternative plants if you have cats that access your garden regularly.

Botanical Distinction

Despite the common name, daylilies are not true lilies and belong to the Hemerocallis genus rather than Lilium. This distinction is important as care requirements and growing conditions differ significantly from bulbous lilies.

Why Choose 'Stella de Oro'?

Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' represents the perfect introduction to daylilies for novice gardeners whilst remaining a favourite among experienced horticulturists. The combination of compact size, exceptional reblooming performance, and cheerful golden flowers creates a plant that delivers consistent results with minimal maintenance requirements.

This award-winning perennial offers outstanding value for gardeners seeking reliable, long-blooming plants that provide colour from late spring through autumn. Whether used in mass plantings, mixed borders, containers, or as specimen plants, 'Stella de Oro' provides the perfect balance of ornamental appeal, wildlife value, and garden reliability that makes it an essential addition to any garden seeking vibrant, dependable colour throughout the growing season.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email sales@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

* Please Note: Shrubs in 20 litre pots and above might require a pallet delivery starting at £79.99 per pallet. Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get approximately 5 plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2.0m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
