An exquisite alpine beauty with shimmering apricot-orange blooms
Helianthemum 'Shot Silk' is a truly captivating alpine perennial that brings Mediterranean charm to any garden. This compact, evergreen sub-shrub produces an abundant display of delicate, papery flowers in unique apricot-orange tones that shimmer like silk in the sunlight - hence its evocative name. Perfect for rock gardens, alpine collections, or sunny borders, 'Shot Silk' offers months of continuous colour from late spring through summer whilst requiring minimal care once established. Its drought tolerance and love of poor soils make it an invaluable plant for challenging garden situations.
The flowers of 'Shot Silk' are truly special, displaying a sophisticated blend of apricot, orange, and soft yellow tones that seem to glow with an inner light. Each bloom measures approximately 2-3cm across and features five delicate, papery petals with a silky texture that creates beautiful light-catching effects throughout the day. The flowers are produced in profusion across the plant's surface, creating a carpet of colour that lasts for months. Individual blooms are short-lived but are constantly replaced by new buds, ensuring continuous display.
The small, narrow leaves are grey-green in colour and evergreen, providing year-round structure and interest. The foliage forms dense, neat cushions that create an attractive backdrop for the flowers. The leaves have a slightly felted texture and silvery undertones that complement the warm flower colours beautifully.
'Shot Silk' develops into a low, spreading mat that hugs the ground, making it perfect for carpeting effects or trailing over walls and rockery edges. The plant maintains a naturally neat, cushion-like form without requiring regular pruning, though it benefits from occasional tidying after flowering.
This alpine specialist thrives in well-draining, poor to moderately fertile soils. Rich, fertile soils can actually be detrimental, encouraging soft, lush growth that's more prone to winter damage. Alkaline soils are particularly appreciated, though neutral conditions are also suitable. Excellent drainage is absolutely essential - waterlogged soils will quickly kill the plant, especially in winter.
Full sun is essential for optimal flowering and plant health. 'Shot Silk' will not tolerate shade and requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In shadier conditions, the plant becomes leggy, flowers poorly, and may succumb to fungal problems.
Once established, 'Shot Silk' is extremely drought tolerant and actually prefers dry conditions. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of failure with this plant. Water sparingly during establishment, then rely on natural rainfall except during extreme drought. The plant's Mediterranean origins mean it's perfectly adapted to dry summers.
Plant in spring or early autumn in the sunniest, most well-drained position available. If your soil is heavy or clay-based, create raised beds or add plenty of grit and sharp sand to improve drainage. Plant at the same depth as in the container, spacing plants 30-40cm apart for ground cover effects.
'Shot Silk' is refreshingly low-maintenance once established. After the main flush of flowers, lightly trim back the spent blooms and any straggly growth to encourage a second flush and maintain the neat cushion shape. Avoid cutting back into old wood as this may not regenerate. No regular feeding is required - in fact, feeding can be counterproductive.
In areas with wet winters, protect plants from excessive moisture by ensuring perfect drainage and considering raised planting. The plant is completely cold-hardy but can suffer from winter wet. A collar of grit around the plant helps prevent stem rot.
'Shot Silk' is perfect for rock gardens where its low-growing habit and spectacular flowers can be showcased against stone backdrops. It's ideal for crevice planting and looks particularly effective cascading over walls or between rocks.
The plant thrives in gravel garden settings where the excellent drainage and reflected heat create perfect growing conditions. It pairs beautifully with other Mediterranean plants in drought-resistant schemes.
Use 'Shot Silk' as edging for sunny borders where its low height won't obstruct taller plants behind. The long flowering season provides consistent front-of-border colour throughout the growing season.
Excellent for containers, particularly shallow alpine pans or troughs where drainage can be controlled. Use a gritty, free-draining compost and ensure containers have adequate drainage holes.
The drought tolerance and low growth make 'Shot Silk' suitable for extensive green roof systems where conditions are challenging and maintenance minimal.
'Shot Silk' combines beautifully with other Mediterranean and alpine plants. Excellent companions include lavender, rosemary, and other grey-leaved herbs. Alpine plants such as aubrieta, arabis, and other helianthemum varieties create stunning mixed displays. The warm orange tones complement purple-flowered plants like Nepeta or Salvia particularly well.
New growth appears early, with flower buds forming as temperatures rise. The first flowers typically appear in late spring, coinciding with other alpine favourites.
Peak flowering period with continuous blooms in warm weather. The shimmering flowers are at their most spectacular during the long days of midsummer.
Flowering often continues into early autumn, particularly if plants are trimmed after the main summer flush. The evergreen foliage provides structure as other plants die back.
Maintains its evergreen cushion throughout winter, providing valuable structure in rock gardens and alpine collections during the dormant season.
Poor drainage or humid conditions can lead to fungal issues. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overhead watering. Good air circulation is essential.
The most common cause of plant loss is winter waterlogging rather than cold temperatures. Raised planting and gritty soil amendments help prevent this.
Generally pest-free, though aphids may occasionally appear on soft new growth. These rarely cause significant damage and can be managed organically.
'Shot Silk' can be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings taken in late summer. The cuttings root easily in gritty compost and can be overwintered in a cold frame before planting out the following spring.
Once established, 'Shot Silk' can survive extended periods without water, making it valuable for water-wise gardening and climate-resilient plantings.
The flowers attract various beneficial insects including bees and butterflies, providing valuable nectar during the long flowering season.
With proper growing conditions, plants can live for many years, gradually spreading to form larger colonies whilst maintaining their neat, compact habit.
Helianthemum 'Shot Silk' offers everything alpine gardeners could want: spectacular flowers, easy care, drought tolerance, and year-round structure. The unique apricot-orange blooms provide a sophisticated colour that's surprisingly versatile in garden combinations, whilst the plant's reliability makes it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners.
For sunny, well-drained positions where other plants might struggle, 'Shot Silk' thrives and provides months of colour with minimal input. Its compact size makes it perfect for small gardens, containers, or as part of larger Mediterranean-style plantings. The combination of beautiful flowers, attractive evergreen foliage, and bulletproof reliability makes this an essential plant for any sunny garden.
Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.
As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.
Alpines are a group of perennials that generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.
As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.
It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.
By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
