Cotoneaster are a group of evergreen and deciduous shrubs producing an abundance of beautiful showy berries and rich autumn foliage colour. Pink buds open into masses of small white flowers in May and June, clothing the plant in a highly decorative display. Cotoneaster are hardy, unfussy and low maintenance – growing almost anywhere and needing nothing more than a trim back once a year. They’re perfect for attracting wildlife into the garden too – their nectar-rich flowers are well-loved by bees and butterflies whilst the glossy berries provide valuable food for nesting birds. Evergreen cotoneaster plants are best if year-round privacy is top priority whilst the autumn display adds an extra season of interest if you don’t mind choosing a deciduous variety. The name Cotoneaster comes from the Latin ’cotone’ for quince and ‘aster’ for resembling, giving their similarity to the Quince plant. They are relatives of the hawthorn family, originating from the Palaearctic region.
