Berberis Orange Sunrise is a captivating compact deciduous shrub that lives up to its name with brilliant orange foliage that seems to glow from within, particularly in morning and evening light. This exceptional barberry cultivar offers intense seasonal colour combined with a neat, rounded growth habit, making it an outstanding choice for gardeners seeking reliable, low-maintenance colour impact throughout the growing season.
Luminous Orange Foliage: Brilliant orange leaves with an almost glowing quality in sunlight
Compact Rounded Form: Neat, manageable size reaching 1-1.2 metres tall and wide
Seasonal Colour Evolution: Foliage intensifies from spring through to spectacular autumn display
Dense Growth Habit: Creates excellent coverage and screening potential
Exceptional Hardiness: Outstanding cold tolerance and disease resistance
Protective Thorns: Natural deterrent against deer and rabbits
Light Requirements
Berberis Orange Sunrise performs best in full sun to light partial shade. The signature glowing orange colour is most pronounced with 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily. Morning sun is particularly beneficial for enhancing the luminous quality of the foliage.
Soil Preferences
Soil Type: Thrives in most well-draining soils including clay, loam, sandy, and chalky conditions
pH Range: Adaptable to slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soils (pH 6.0-7.5)
Drainage: Good drainage essential - waterlogged conditions will cause root problems
Fertility: Performs excellently in average garden soils; overly rich conditions may dilute colour intensity
Climate Tolerance
Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS Hardiness H6)
Temperature Range: Withstands temperatures down to -25°C
Weather Resistance: Excellent tolerance to wind, rain, and harsh weather conditions
Optimal Planting Season
Potted berberis can be planted any time of the year, providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and its not excessively windy. Some gardeners consider March until October to be the optimum planting time, with spring planting providing the longest establishment period.
Spacing Guidelines
Specimen Planting: Allow 1.5-2 metres spacing to showcase individual form
Group Planting: Space 1-1.2 metres apart for massed colour effect
Hedging: Plant 80cm-1 metre apart for informal hedge screening
Planting Instructions
Excavate a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth
Incorporate organic matter and grit into heavy clay soils to improve drainage
Position the plant at the same depth as it was growing in the container
Backfill with amended soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets
Water thoroughly and apply a 5cm layer of organic mulch around the base
Watering Requirements
Provide consistent watering during the first growing season to establish a robust root system. Once established, Orange Sunrise is drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods, especially on sandy soils.
Nutritional Needs
Apply a balanced granular fertiliser in early spring. Annual mulching with compost provides adequate nutrition for most garden situations. Avoid excessive nitrogen which may promote leafy growth at the expense of colour development.
Pruning Programme
Timing: Prune immediately after flowering in late spring/early summer
Method: Light pruning to maintain shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches
Rejuvenation: Older plants can be renovated by cutting back by one-third every few years
Safety Precautions: Always wear thick gloves and protective clothing due to sharp thorns
Orange Sunrise demonstrates excellent natural resistance to pests and diseases. Maintain good air circulation around plants and avoid overhead watering to prevent any potential fungal issues.
Landscape Uses
Feature Plant: Creates stunning focal points in mixed borders and island beds
Colour Blocks: Mass planting for dramatic seasonal colour impact
Informal Hedging: Forms attractive low to medium height screening
Container Gardening: Suitable for large containers and raised planters
Slope Planting: Excellent for erosion control on banks and slopes

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.
Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.
