Viburnum
Viburnum plicatum Lanarth
This is a large, delightful, low maintenance deciduous shrub with fresh, oval, dark green leaves that are interestingly serrated and attractively veined. It is upright in habit but with horizontal branches that form a beautiful, wide, tiered effect. The various tiers become draped with showy heads of bold, eye-catching, creamy white flowers, similar to those of a lacecap hydrangea, which provide a fabulous fragrance to the garden. The flowers are sometimes followed by reddish-black fruit and in the autumn the foliage turns to various attractive shades of orange-red and purple. Excellent for planting as a stand-alone specimen shrub, growing in groups at the back of a mixed shrub border or even using as an ornamental flowering hedge, it’s great for adding softness to the spring garden and will help to attract wildlife.
