Chusan Palm
Trachycarpus fortunei
Sometimes referred to as Chamaerops Excelsa, this is a very striking palm tree with a sturdy trunk and an array of fan-shaped leaves, each dividing into long, slender, splayed out fingers. Flowering and seeding freely, it’s perfect for adding tropical flair to planting schemes and makes the ultimate statement in an exotic garden setting. Starting off with a mass of foliage spread out near ground level, it gradually hoists itself up on its hairy trunk, shedding old leaves as it ascends. Thriving in seaside gardens, it blows elegantly in the wind adding ‘movement’ to the garden and making an excellent specimen for growing in a container on a sunny courtyard. In colder regions it requires the shelter of a warm wall to protect it from frost and cold winds
