Deerhorn Cedar
Thujopsis dolobrata
This medium-sized, coniferous evergreen tree has the most marvellous fanning limb structure and needle colouration. Sprays of overlapping, scale-like, light green young leaves have white markings on the underside and mature to dark green with age. In the winter they take on stunning shades of bronzy red and oranges, giving the impression of being braided cloth. Small, globe shaped, woody cones appear on mature plants in early spring, becoming bright green, blue-spotted fruits in the summer. When in view, the attractive, vertically furrowed red bark adds further colour and interest to the garden. Although it requires protection from dry, sweeping winds, it does well in a considerable amount of shade, having evolved under almost continual cloud cover.
