Western Red Cedar
Thuja plicata Atrovirens
This is a neat, fast growing evergreen conifer with bright, glossy green leaves which are grey underneath and give off a pleasant, fruit fragrance when crushed. It has cinnamon-red, shredding bark with spreading branches which make it ideal for hedging purposes. Tolerant of a wide range of conditions, it can be grown in dense shade, wet ground and chalky soils. It’s similar to green leylandii but slightly slower growing, taking on a bronze tinge in the winter. Although its potential size is very large, it can be kept at any desired height and width with regular pruning.
