White Cedar
Thuja occidentalis Rheingold
This is an excellent, dwarf conifer which can be incorporated into a rockery or heather garden and makes a lovely addition to a golden-themed border. Flat, fan-shaped sprays of finely-patterned, scale-like foliage are orange-tipped when young, becoming bright golden-yellow in the summer. It is evergreen but looks most spectacular in the middle of the winter when the foliage takes on rich shades of coppery-gold on the prominent branches. It is a low-maintenance choice with no serious insect or disease problems, forming a rounded to conical shape if allowed to grow naturally.
