Common Lilac
Syringa vulgaris Andenken an Ludwig Spaeth
This is a large, deciduous shrub which has been one of the mainstays of the British shrub border for over a hundred years. It bears large, fragrant, rosy-red blooms, which compensate for the short flowering period, in late May and early June. These are produced above ovate, mid-green leaves and make Souvenir de Louis Spaeth one of the best lilacs available today. It was raised in Späths nurseries in Berlin in 1883 and has received a RHS First Class Certificate.
