Japanese Spiraea
Spiraea japonica Genpei(Shirobana)
This is a dwarf, deciduous variety which has a dense, mound-forming growth habit and adds an ornamental charm to any garden setting. It bears attractive, red flowers, fading to pink, and then to pure white giving an unusual, yet effective, tricolour effect. These emerge from deep red buds and are produced in stages between July and October, so all colours are on the plant simultaneously. Often there will be a cluster dedicated to a single colour, and another cluster of a completely different colour right alongside it. The bright green, lance-shaped and slightly toothed foliage is produced on slender stems and can used to bring character to any garden or landscape planting. It makes a wonderful shrub for border accent, specimen or low hedges and is best grown in front of a larger, dark evergreen variety so that the bright green foliage has a backdrop to contrast against.
