Japanese Mountain Ash
Sorbus commixta
This is a popular, medium-sized deciduous tree with attractive, glossy green leaves that have 6-8 pairs of alternately arranged, smooth, tapered leaflets. These appear with a lovely coppery tint and slightly serrated edges in the spring and take on a rich shade of scarlet red in the autumn. It produces a fabulous display of small, white flowers which are emerge from long, pointed, sticky buds from April to May before coming ablaze with outstanding, large clusters of ornamental, long lasting, bright orange-red berries in the autumn. It has a slender, upright, columnar growth habit that branches out and becomes broader at the top as it matures. Perfect for growing alongside a street or avenue, it also looks stunning when incorporated into a woodland area and it’s tolerance of urban pollution makes it suitable for urban plantings.
