Umbrella Pine
Sciadopitys Verticillata
Umbrella pine is a fully hardy, small to medium-sized evergreen tree with luxuriant, dark green needle-like leaves which are whorled round the horizontal branches like the spokes of an umbrella. It has a dense, heavy-branching habit when young, becoming more open and loose with age as a more conical shape takes over. As a mature tree it varies from being broadly pyramidal to having an almost spiral-like form, making it great for growing as a specimen plant in a large open space or in the middle of a large lawn. Avoid exposed sites which experience sweeping winter winds as it may suffer from wind burn in cold sites.
