Willowleaf Pear
Pyrus salicifolia Pendula
This is a small, compact, weeping tree with gracefully arching branches that are clothed in narrow, cascading silvery-grey leaves. These are reminiscent of willow foliage and gradually darken to shiny grey-green during the summer before taking on spectacular, bright autumn colours. It bursts into life in spring when the tight clusters of buds erupt into fantastic, creamy-white flowers. These flowers are followed by completely inedible, small green pears which are no more than 3cm long and may cause a severe stomach upset if ingested. Perfect for smaller, urban gardens, it can be grown in a large container on the patio or used as a specimen tree in the centre of a small lawn.
