Birch Bark Cherry (Tibetan Cherry)
Prunus serrula

This is an easy to grow, rounded deciduous tree producing small clusters of beautiful, single, bowl-shaped white flowers which emerge from long, pointed buds in May. It is quite uncommon with narrow, serrated, almost willow-like dark green foliage that turns to lovely shaded of orange, red and yellow in the autumn. One of its great features is its stunning, glossy, copper-brown bark which appears shiny and polished as the old bark peels away in attractive circles. Older bark has a magnificent, burnished appearance and maintains its lovely appearance all year round, even during the winter. The flowers are followed by small, oval, cherry-like fruit with a ribbed stone in the centre and it combines well with Carex Comans, Viburnum Davidii and Skimmia varieties

Position: Prefers Full sun

Soil: Prefers a moderately fertile, moist yet well-drained soil

Rate of Growth: Average

Flowering Period: May

Flower Colour: White

Other Features: Commonly known as the Tibetan Cherry, this is a great choice for adding something different to a medium-sized woodland garden. The name serrula means with small, saw-like teeth, referring to the slight serration in the willow-like leaves. It was introduced to Britain from West China in 1908 and has won the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit

Hardiness: Fully hardy: stands a temperature down to -15°C

Garden Care: Back fill with plenty of well-rotted garden compost and stake firmly when planting. We’d normally recommend keeping pruning to a minimum but if it suffers from silver leaf any particularly badly affected branches can be removed in summer. Otherwise, simply remove any dead and damaged branches in late winter or early spring. Grow in a rich, fertile soil for best results as it encourages rapid growth which means the bark peels off more often in larger papery sheets
