Portuguese Laurel
Prunus lusitanica
This is a large, versatile evergreen shrub with elongated, glossy dark green leaves and white, early summer, cup-shaped flowers. These are produced in long, slender racemes and possess a sweet hawthorn scent. It makes a fantastic dense hedge, screen or windbreak and forms an attractive, shapely tree if allowed to grow naturally. Its versatility means it can be grown in sun or shade, in any well-drained soil, including chalk. Dense enough to be used as a nesting site by birds, its compact growth habit means it can be easily clipped into formal shapes. The flowers are followed by small red fruits which turn dark purple in winter.
