Pygmy Bamboo
Pleioblastus pygmaeus
This is an excellent, dwarf, semi-evergreen bamboo with slender, erect, pencil-thin canes which are divided into segments by distinctive purplish nodes. It is extremely hardy and displays small, bright green, palm-shaped leaves with serrated margins and tiny hairs on the leaf sheaths. It spreads very vigorously by underground runners in all directions, making it perfect for using as groundcover over a large area or for controlling erosion on banks and slopes. Allow it to roam in woodland gardens to create a fantastic, naturalising effect or plant it as a grass substitute in areas of the lawn which never look very appealing
Position:
Full sun to dense shade
Soil:
Prefers a moist, yet well-drained, moderately fertile soil
Rate of Growth:
Fast
Flowering Period:
Non-flowering
Flower Colour:
Non-flowering
Other Features:
It makes a great choice for growing in a container, where the restriction on the roots will prevent it from becoming invasive. Perfect for using in the Japanese garden, it’s also suitable for using as a bonsai specimen or a starter plant for bamboo enthusiasts. It will grow practically anywhere but prefers a moist location in dappled to full shade
Hardiness:
Fully hardy: stands a temperature down to -15°C
Garden Care:
Its spread can be limited to any desired size by restricting the spread of the roots using an underground barrier. Remove dead and damaged canes and clip back or mow down to any desired height in spring. We’d recommend either trimming or mowing it right back to the ground every few years to restore vitality and prevent it from becoming straggly
Eventual Height: 60cm
Eventual Spread:
5m
