Mock Orange
Philadelphus Belle Etoile
A handsome mock orange that produces an abundance of charming, cup-shaped single blooms with a flush of maroon in the centre and golden-yellow stamens. These are wonderfully fragrant and unfurl just as spring blooming shrubs are finishing their display. It is an arching, deciduous shrub with tapered, dark green leaves and a compact growth habit. Perfect for the middle of a sunny border, it should be planted near entrances and paths to allow the sweet, orange blossom fragrance to by fully appreciated. A charming variety with mahogany-coloured young stems that should be cut back to a strong bud each year after flowering. It’s easy-to-grow, suitable for poor soils and tolerant of urban pollution.
