Boston Ivy
Parthenocissus tricuspidata Veitchii
This is a strong growing, self-clinging vine adhering itself to supports by using adhesive pads at the ends of leaf tendrils. It is a tall growing variety which will reach the height of its support up to around 20 metres (showing 1-2 metres of annual growth). It is a healthy and undemanding species but does require some protection from cold winter winds and frosts. The foliage is dark green, turning brilliant scarlet in autumn, the variegation being more dramatic when sited in a sunny position. Thrives when grown on a wall, but is also suitable for growing over arbors, pergolas and various other supports. Although this climber grows best in full sun it can also thrive in partial shade when sited in a fertile, well-drained soil.
