Climbing Hydrangea
Hydrangea petiolaris
This is a valuable, fully hardy strong-growing climber reaching up to 15 metres (0.5-1 metres of annual growth). Aerial roots attach it to the support, though it may require some help initially. Gorgeous flowers, which are bronze in June to July, are greenish-white with several large, prominent white florets along the margin. Green, ovate leaves on long petioles turn to yellow in autumn and the stems appear copper brown with peeling bark. Should be grown in a moist, acidic soil where partial or full shade is available. Excellent on walls, trees and pergolas, as well as being an brilliant ground cover plant.
