Bedding Hyacint
Hyacinth orientalis Carnegie

This is an easy-to-grow Hyacinth with leafless flower stalks that bear masses of stunning, tightly-packed, pure white, star-shaped flowers. These provide a powerful, sweet fragrance which fills the room and makes Carnegie a great choice for using as an indoor-flowering pot plant. It has a neat, decorative appearance with a long flowering period which runs from mid-March to mid-May.

The bulbs that will be supplied will be disease-free, well-sized and firm

Garden Care:

If growing outdoors

Planting time: September – October
Planting depth: 15cm (6 inches)
Planting spacing: 20cm (8 inches)
Height: 25cm (10 inches)

Add well-rotted compost or peat to the soil before putting the bulbs in. Although they can be left outdoors over the winter after flowering has finished, the display in the second year would not be as good so we recommend allowing the foliage to die down, lifting the bulbs and storing them in dry peat indoors until planting time comes round again.

If growing indoors

If planting the bulbs indoors use “forcing” techniques – plant the bulbs into pots from October to November and keep the pots in a cold and dark, but frost-free location. The cold period should last 8-14 weeks until the shoots are about 2.5-5cm high, when it should be moved to a shady and cool spot indoors. After a few days move it close to the window and leave it there until the flower buds appear. Once the flower buds have appeared move the pot or bowl to the position where you would like the bulbs to flower.

After flowering cut off the dead blooms but not the flower stalks. Watering should be withheld after indoor Hyacinths have flowered to let the foliage wither and then the bulbs should be removed. Clean them and store for planting in the garden in early autumn.
