Baby's Breath
Gypsophila panicutata Bristol Fairy

An explosion of light, airy, double white flowers appear in leafless flowering sprays from June to August, appearing to float like wispy clouds above the foliage. This is an outstanding, broad perennial with healthy, wiry stems that wind in between neighbouring flowers and attractive, narrow, mid-green leaves. It makes a great choice for covering up dying bulb foliage or perennials that go dormant during the summer and can be used in cut or dried flower arrangements. The flowers dry out naturally in early autumn if left on the plant, making as much impact as when they first opened. Dead heading fading flowers during the summer will help to encourage a second flush of blooms in September

Position: Prefers Full sun

Soil: A well-drained, slightly alkaline soil

Rate of Growth: Average to fast

Flowering Period: June to August

Flower Colour: White

Other Features: Perfect for creating a natural look in the garden. The blooms are widely used by flower arrangers and are carried by many brides

Hardiness: Fully hardy: stands a temperature down to -15°C

Garden Care: Incorporate some lime into the ground when planting if your soil is acidic. Faded flowers can be dead headed during the summer to encourage a second flush of blooms in September or left on the plant and allowed to dry out naturally. Trim back in spring to keep the plant looking neat and tidy but do not lift and divide or replant once established. The roots do not like to be disrupted and clumps are not invasive so there is no need to try and divide them. Please Note: Many perennials go ‘dormant’ which, in some cases, means that there is little or no top growth apparent between November and March. If you order perennials whilst they are dormant, they may not be visible above the soil level when purchased but will burst into life in spring. In the dormant period, we may not have stocks of all varieties in all pot sizes and therefore reserve the right to supply 9cm pots instead of 1 or 2 litre plants and adjust the price down accordingly.
