Gooseberry Careless
Gooseberry Careless
A reliable, deciduous Gooseberry with thorny stems of deeply-lobed leaves and small, pink-flushed green flowers. Heavy crops of large, smooth berries have a crisp flavour and are produced on a permanent system of fruiting side shoots. These are green when young; gradually maturing to yellow and ripening by mid-July. It has a crisp flavour that’s perfect for bottling and preserves if picked early or great for desserts if allowed to ripen fully. Suitable for training as a fan, espalier, cordon or standard, it’s a fast growing, deciduous variety that’s easy-to-grow and not fussy about soil type.

Incorporate lots of well-rotted organic matter into the planting hole. It’s also important to keep the base of the plant weed free, so we’d recommend taking the time to prepare the ground properly, removing all weeds before planting. Keep the plant well watered during periods of hot, dry weather and mulch with well-rotted manure each year in the spring. To guarantee a good display of fruit, feed with a potassium-based fertiliser in spring and protect the plant from birds using netting while the berries are developing. During the first year after planting, reduce the length of shoots by half, cutting them off at an outward-facing bud in the winter. Once the plant has become established, cut out dead, diseased and crossing branches only. Some shade is required in periods of very hot weather. Immature green berries which can be thinned out in May
