Fig
Fig Brown Turkey

Large, architectural leaves and sweet, coppery-coloured fruit with pinkish-white flesh that’s ready for picking between August and September. This is a highly ornamental, deciduous fig that’s suitable for training on wires outdoors or under glass. It should be grown against a south or west-facing wall to prevent the top-growth from being killed off in strong, cold winds. Restricting the spread of the roots in the ground or growing in a pot helps to encourage a plentiful display of fruit. A prolific, reliable cropper that can be trained as an espalier and becomes drought tolerant once established.

Position: Prefers partial shade

Soil: Tolerant of most garden soils providing they are reasonably well-drained and do not “puddle”

Rate of Growth: Average

Flowering Period: Non-flowering

Flower Colour: Non-flowering

Other Features: A prolific and reliable variety which has received the prestigious RHS award of garden merit.

Hardiness: Fully hardy: stands a temperature down to -15°C

Garden Care: Figs are best trained on wires for ease of management. The roots should be restricted by either a container or piece of corrugated plastic; otherwise they are liable to make more leaf than fruit. Some protection from extreme winter weather is required because hard prolonged frosts may kill the top growth. If this does happen don’t worry as the plant will revive from below ground.
