Umbrella Bamboo
Fargesia murielae Simba

This is a dwarf bamboo with a tight, clump-forming growth habit and low, arching branches. It has the freshest foliage of all the bamboos and forms a dense, bushy specimen growing no more than 2 metres in height. The bright green leaves emerge early when the other bamboos can look a bit dull, making it ideal for adding a splash of colour to smaller gardens in the spring. Although it prefers a sheltered location it will tolerate coastal positions providing the conditions aren’t too extreme. Having received the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1992, this is a great variety which can be used to compliment any other form of bamboo.

Position: Full sun to dense shade

Soil: A moist, fertile soil is preferred

Rate of Growth: Slow to average

Flowering Period: Non-flowering

Flower Colour: Non-flowering

Other Features: It’s widely adaptable to most soils and situations and can also be grown in a container

Hardiness: Fully hardy: stands a temperature down to -15°C

Garden Care: This is an easy to grow and maintain bamboo which is particularly suited to the smaller garden. Ideally, it should be situated in a sheltered location where some protection from strong winds is available. Mulch with bark or a well-rotted organic matter in the spring to keep the roots cool and moist during the growing season. The damper the location, the better it will stand midday sun, so if you plan to grow bamboo in full sun make sure the soil is always moist.
