Cotoneaster
Cotoneaster simonsii
This is a vigorous, low maintenance, medium-sized semi-evergreen shrub with small, oval, sharply pointed, glossy dark green leaves that turn to varying shades of orange-red during the autumn and winter. It produces beautiful clusters of small, attractively pink-tinged, white flowers in June, followed by stunning, bright scarlet-red berries that persist well into the winter. Its dense, upright growth habit makes it great for using as a hedging plant (space in 600mm centres) in smaller gardens because it can, with careful pruning, be kept narrow. Tolerant of a wide range of conditions including exposed windy sites, dry and damp shade, salt-laden air and chalky soil, it’s excellent for attracting wildlife such as bees and birds to the garden.
