North American Redbud
Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy
This is a small, multi-branched, spreading deciduous tree which produces clusters of beautiful, magenta-red buds on bare branches early in the year. These open to reveal a haze of showy, pea-like, pale pink blooms that provide an impact in late spring to early summer. After the flowers have finished, heart-shaped, rich reddish-purple leaves with attractive pointed tips start to emerge. Some of the leaves reflect the light whilst others appear translucent, creating a fabulous tapestry of different shades of purple which looks particular spectacular in direct sunlight. It makes an excellent specimen tree for lawns, woodland gardens or naturalised areas and is tolerant of salt-laden air, making it suitable for coastal plantings. We’d particularly recommend it for growing against a wall at the back of a border, as it prefers to be grown in a sheltered location
Position:
Prefers Full sun
Soil:
Poor to moderately fertile, free draining, neutral to alkaline soil
Rate of Growth:
Slow
Flowering Period:
May to June
Flower Colour:
Pale to rose pink
Other Features:
It produces pendulous, bean-like seed pods which appear in late spring after the flowering has finished. Commonly known as North American Redbud, it is grown for its foliage and is sometimes used as a street tree in residential areas

Fully hardy: stands a temperature down to -15°C
Garden Care:
Plant in its final location when young as it doesn’t transplant very well. Although it’s fully hardy it should be grown in a warm, south-facing position that’s sheltered from strong winds for best results. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted compost into the planting hole and stake firmly. Remove any dead, diseased and damaged branches in late autumn and avoid using excessive amounts of nitrogen fertiliser as this is damaging to the plant
