Bluebeard Lilac
Caryopteris clandonensis Heavenly Blue
An admirable flowering shrub bearing clusters of intense blue blooms in August and September. The caryopteris is a compact bush with beautiful green aromatic foliage that is slightly toothed and has a silver-plated reverse. It is a great woody perennial which forms a densely branched, deciduous, mounded shrub to 4 feet tall and at least as wide. It prefers full sun and average soil and should be cut back in mid-spring to the lowest new growth. The slightly silvery green foliage and puffy medium blue flowers work well in most garden schemes, and particularly combined with grass varieties. It also looks great planted as an informal hedge with a potential height and spread of approximately one metre by one metre.
