Yellow Trumpet
Campsis Radicans 'Flava'

An extremely vigorous and robust deciduous climber bearing masses of beautiful, trumpet-shaped, rich yellow blooms which are produced at branch ends all summer long. These tropical-looking flowers are borne in pendulous clusters above long, coarsely toothed, glossy dark-green leaves with pointed tips and distinctive veining. It’s native to China and climbs by aerial roots, growing rapidly to the maximum height that its support allows. As the weather cools, the foliage mellows to yellow-green and blooms give way to pod-like capsules of winged seeds. A great choice for providing fast cover over a wall, fence, arbour or pergola providing it’s cut back regularly to keep it in check.

Position: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Any reasonably fertile, moist yet well-drained soil

Rate of Growth: Fast

Flowering Period: July to September

Flower Colour: Brilliant yellow

Other Features: ‘Flava’ is very invasive and does require regular pruning to keep it in check. One way of controlling its vigour is to dead-head faded flowers immediately so that the plant puts its effort into producing more flowers rather than growing in size. Another useful technique is to sink a large, plastic container into a hole in the ground and plant the climber inside this container. This restricts the spread of the roots and helps to control the rate of growth. Some parts of the plant are poisonous and may cause a rash.

Hardiness: Borderline

Garden Care: Some protection from cold winter weather is required. Protect from frosts and apply a generous mulch or bark or well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in winter to promote winter survival. Prune as required after flowering to keep the foliage growth within intended boundaries.

Eventual Height:  7m
Eventual Spread:  2.5m
