Scots Heather
Calluna Vulgaris Fred Chapple
A stunning variety with dark green, evergreen foliage that’s topped with red, creamy-pink and copper-bronze tips during the spring. It produces an abundance of beautiful, urn-shaped, lilac-pink flowers which clothe the length of the branches from August to October. Named after the first president of the Heather Society, Fred Chapple, who found the heather shortly after the Second World War, it is perfect for using in the foreground of a small border or as a foundation plant. It’s also a great choice for using in mass plantings, along walkways and in troughs or patio containers that have good drainage. Prune it annually to maintain a compact, neat shape and don’t be tempted to over-fertilise because it prefers a rocky, unimproved soil.
