Cruciferae
Aubrieta Red Cascade
This is a fantastic, mat-forming evergreen perennial with small, soft grey-green leaves that are hairy to minimise water loss from the leaf surface, making it drought tolerant. It produces an abundance of single, four-petalled, deep reddish-purple flowers which are held in short terminal spikes and clothe the entire plant from April to May. Although it has always traditionally been used in the rock garden, it is just at home at the front of a mixed border or in a hanging basket along with other, less hardy basket plants. It also looks stunning when allowed to cascade over low walls or other obstacles in the garden and is invaluable for adding colour to the spring garden.

A poor to moderately nutritious, well-drained soil
Rate of Growth:
Average to fast
Flowering Period:
April to May

Other Features:
Native to mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, Aubretia has been a very popular garden plant for hundreds of years. Its maximum spread is quite unpredictable but usually falls between 40cm and 60cm

Fully hardy: stands a temperature down to -15°C
Garden Care:
Cut back quite hard by shearing after flowering has finished to maintain a neat, compact growth habit and to encourage a second flush of blooms. Please Note: Many perennials go ‘dormant’ which, in some cases, means that there is little or no top growth apparent between November and March. If you order perennials whilst they are dormant, they may not be visible above the soil level when purchased but will burst into life in spring. In the dormant period, we may not have stocks of all varieties in all pot sizes and therefore reserve the right to supply 9cm pots instead of 1 or 2 litre plants and adjust the price down accordingly.
Eventual Height: 15cm
Eventual Spread:
50cm
