Cruciferae
Aubrieta Royal Blue

This is a fantastic, mat-forming evergreen perennial with small, soft grey-green leaves that are hairy to minimise water loss from the leaf surface, making it drought tolerant. It produces an abundance of single, four-petalled, light blue flowers which are held in short terminal spikes and clothe the entire plant from April to May. Although it has always traditionally been used in the rock garden, it is just at home at the front of a mixed border or in a hanging basket along with other, less hardy basket plants. It also looks stunning when allowed to cascade over low walls or other obstacles in the garden and is invaluable for adding colour to the spring garden.

Position: Full sun

Soil: A poor to moderately nutritious, well-drained soil

Rate of Growth: Average to fast

Flowering Period: April to May

Flower Colour: Light blue

Other Features: Native to mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, Aubretia has been a very popular garden plant for hundreds of years. Its maximum spread is quite unpredictable but usually falls between 40cm and 60cm

Hardiness: Fully hardy

Garden Care: Cut back quite hard by shearing after flowering has finished to maintain a neat, compact growth habit and to encourage a second flush of blooms. Please Note: Although all our perennials are advertised as being sold in 1 litre containers, they are sometimes stocked in 9cm pots instead (particularly during the winter). If you order perennials from us, we reserve the right to supply them in 9cm pots instead of 1 litre containers, at a price of £2.80 instead of £2.80. Between November and March many perennials go ‘dormant’ which, in some cases, means they are sold as a root, corm or bulb with no top growth. If you order perennials whilst they are dormant, they may not be visible above the soil level when purchased but will burst into life in the spring.

Eventual Height:  15cm
Eventual Spread:  50cm
