African Lily
Agapanthus Headbourne Hybrids

This is a long-flowering, clump-forming hardy perennial with glossy, strap-like, mid-green leaves and clusters of divine, trumpet-shaped flowers which vary in colour from deep blue to white. These are borne on stiff, upright flowering stems producing a pleasing gradation of blues which can be used to great effect in flower arrangements. Perfect for growing as a specimen plant in a container on the patio, it also looks excellent when combined with pink flowering perennials in a sheltered border. An elegant, free flowering variety of African lily whose clumps can be lifted and divided every three to five years if required.

Position: Full sun

Soil: A moist, yet well-drained, fertile soil (use John Innes number 3 compost for containers)

Rate of Growth: Average

Flowering Period: July to September

Flower Colour: Blue and white

Other Features: The flowers stems make excellent cut flowers. Ornamental seedheads are also produced after the flowers have faded

Hardiness: Borderline

Garden Care: The crown of the plant should be protected using a dry winter mulch if it’s being grown in an exposed site. We’d also recommend applying a balanced liquid fertiliser each month from spring until the plant flowers. Keeping the plant well watered during long periods of dry weather is essential. Please Note: Although all our perennials are advertised as being sold in 1 litre containers, they are sometimes stocked in 9cm pots instead (particularly during the winter). If you order perennials from us, we reserve the right to supply them in 9cm pots instead of 1 litre containers, at a price of £2.80 instead of £3.80. Between November and March many perennials go ‘dormant’ which, in some cases, means they are sold as a root, corm or bulb with no top growth. If you order perennials whilst they are dormant, they may not be visible above the soil level when purchased but will burst into life in the spring.

Eventual Height:  60cm
Eventual Spread:  40cm
