Norway Maple
Acer platanoides Crimson King
This is a robust, round-headed tree with striking, dark purple-red leaves that appear almost black in the summer. Large clusters of eye-catching, deep yellow flowers which are tinged with red appear on bare branches in spring, beautifying the tree before the leaves appear. It produces spectacular autumn colours and can be used to screen unattractive buildings, tolerating pollution and heavy ground. Although it’s rather fast growing, its spread can be easily controlled with regular pruning. A deciduous variety which makes a perfect specimen tree for a sunny site where the light catches the rich ruby tone of the foliage.
