October Gardening Jobs

Cutting back perennials

Cut back and tidy up the tops of any perennials which have died down. This will help to keep your garden looking neat and prevent any pests from thriving off the dead leaves. Divide any congested clumps of herbaceous perennials and rhubarb plants to ensure a better show next year and fill out borders.

Planting spring bulbs

Plant daffodil, tulip and other spring bulbs to ensure a stunning display in spring. Remember to check planting depths and times of planting. Prune any climbing or rambling roses once they have flowered and tie in any loose stems on your climbers before the autumn winds set in.

Apples harvest

Harvest any remaining apples, pears, apricots and other soft fruits. Many fruits and vegetables can be made into delicious jams and chutneys, or leave them for the birds to enjoy. Harvest your pumpkins, squashes and cabbages before the first frost sets in.

Strawberries over straw

Cauliflower heads will need protecting from the frosts, either wrap them in horticultural fleece or tie the outer leaves around, securing with string. Remove any straw from around your strawberries to increase ventilation to the base of the plant.

Leaves on lawn

Remove any fallen autumn leaves using a suitable lawn/leaf rake, although it may seem a thankless task when the breeze scatters more onto your garden, leaves are excellent in compost and it allows more light to reach your grass. Mow your lawn for one last time before the colder temperatures and frost sets in and renovate any patches you have in your lawn.

Looking into greenhouse

As the days get colder, its time to start moving your tender plants into your greenhouse. Clean and disinfect your greenhouse first to prevent any diseases over-wintering with your plants. Net your ponds to prevent autumn leaves falling in and give your waterbutts a good clean out.
